Tins

DIGIT PLACES REINA, who holds the baby, down and then steps forward, its metal palm on the doorknob of the side of the wrecked building. The reflective metal door mesmerizes Digit with its own image reflecting back.

“Digit?” I press.

Digit's metal finger traces the outline of its shape, “Me.”

“Yeah, you,” I crunch my hand over the knob. “Can we go in?”

Digit's head cranks up at me. Then it nods before pushing the door open. We see a blurred red sign that reads Skyscraper Exhibit. Oddly, this one door is not broken off its hinges, or it has been repaired.

The door squeaks open and Digit steps in first. I search behind me, before following behind Dad and Kyle. Klynn and Jon stick to my sides. Jalal with Dom over his shoulder, Katherine and James enter next, and lastly Reina with the baby and Michael.

When we're all inside, the door slams shut as if on cue and then some Tins jump out of the darkness of the room and aim a variety of guns at us. Digit is still.

Immediately, I pull out my crossbow and aim, just like Dad taught me. One eye open and focused, and my gaze on a distant spot—right on the chest of the Tin closest to us. Even Kyle, Dad, Klynn, Jon, James and Katherine have their guns aimed at the Tins. Jalal drops Dom to his side and reaches for his long weapon.

But just as Jalal is about to grab his gun, the Tin closest to us scans Digit's eyes and speaks. Its voice is metallic and monotone. “You are Tin 07707. We have been watching you.”

Digit steps back. “Watching me?”

“We mean you no harm. We…are like you.” It turns around, to show Digit its neck—where its number sits. “I am Tin 0337, but I call myself Pixel.”

My mind circles with more confusion. More Tins that name themselves?

Pixel then glances behind itself, at another Tin who taps its neck with the number 0723 printed on its back. “This is Strings, named so because no Tin is better than it at electric strings manipulation.”

I wonder if that means that Strings has more imagination and creativity.

Dad pokes his head around Digit, braver now. “You all are marked with four digits instead of five.”

“Yes, we are part of the first thousand created by Lucia Dubois,”

We all just stare, almost not believing what we're seeing. When I hear James' gun click again, I turn around and glare at him. “We're not starting a war with these Tins.”

“Since when did it become these and them? They're Tins. We shut 'em up now, before they turn on us.” His voice is gravely.

“No,” I reply firmly. “If you want to fire, you're on your own. We won't back you up.”

Dad swirls around, defending me. “I don't like Tins any more than the next guy, but if Lexi trusts Digit enough to lead us here, than the least we can do is hear these Tins out.”

James grumbles and then Pixel speaks in its metallic tone. “I promise no harm will come to you as long as you remain under our protection.
